How to Care For Soy Candles

So you want to know how to care for your soy candle! These tips will help you enjoy your soy candles more, get better value out of the candles you purchase, help your candles last longer, and hold their fragrance better.

1. Trim Your Soy Candle Wick

My first tip and probably the most important – trim your soy candle wick. Trim the wick to 1/8 of an inch for a smooth burning flame. It's best to do with wick trimmers but you can also do it with scissors. Just be sure to remove the trimmings from the wax. This should be done before each candle lighting.

2. Your First Burn

The first time you burn your candle is the most important burn. You have to let the entire top of the candle melt, so there's melted wax covering the entire top of the jar. This takes some time but it's so important for the wax to melt from edge to edge of the jar. It takes about one hour for every inch of diameter of the candle. For Pure Placid Soy Candles it takes between 3-4 hours. This will prevent memory rings. A memory ring occurs when the first burn is cut short and it leaves a bit of a ring. When the candle is re-lit it will only melt within the ring and tunneling will occur and the wax on the outer ring will not melt. This tunneling prevents use of a large portion of the candle.

3. Properly Extinguish Your Candle

never blow out your candle! Dip the wick in wax instead. You can use a wick dipper or I sometimes use my wick trimmers to just nudge the wick into the melted wax and then bring it back up out of the wax. This prevents smoke and keeps the fragrance in your candle unharmed.

Have a great time enjoying your candles!
